In this book, the epic story of New York is presented on almost 600 pages with emotional, atmospheric photographs, from the mid-1800s to the present day. As a complement to this treasure trove of images, there are over a hundred quotes and references from relevant books, movies, TV shows, and songs. The city's shifting destinies are all represented, from the wild nights of the Jazz Age and the hedonistic disco era, to the gloomy days of the Great Depression and the devastation of 9/11 and its aftermath, when its shattered but indomitable citizens picked up the pieces.New York's remarkable rise, renewal, and growth is not just the story of a city, but the history of a nation. From the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge to the immigrants arriving at Ellis Island; from the slums of the Lower East Side to the magnificent art deco skyscrapers. The urban beach at Coney Island and the slums of Times Square; the view of Central Park and the crowds on 5th Avenue. The streets, sidewalks, chaos, energy, ethnic diversity, culture, fashion, architecture, anger, and the city's complexity are all described in this beautiful book, block after block. After all, this is the world's greatest city, and great are its extremes, contradictions, and attitude.
