Rome’s founding is linked to a long-held myth involving a god, a she-wolf, and a fraternal rift, and its history continued with even more intrigue—a record on display throughout the city, in all its grandeur. Rome is aptly named the Eternal City, with a never-ending list of must-see landmarks: the Vatican, the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon. But Rome is not just a museum showcasing its past greatness; there is also a modern Rome waiting to be discovered in its cocktail bars, art galleries, and nightlife. While Milan may get all the sartorial glory, Rome is a fashion capital in its own right, home to the headquarters of Fendi, Valentino, Brioni, and Bulgari, to name a few. With a foreword by Assouline’s resident Italy expert, Cesare Cunaccia, and photos from Martine and Prosper Assouline’s own travels to Rome, this book brings the personal facets of the city to life, highlighting the quieter moments found in the quaint alleyways and family-owned osterias. From the heart of a gladiator to the masterpieces of Cinecittà, from the roar of the crowds at Stadio Olimpico to the mouthwatering taste of handmade pasta, the endless wonders of Rome are not only experienced but felt through the pages of Roma Eterna. Hop aboard a cherry-red Vespa and ride into the sunset à la Roman Holiday and fall in love with this marvelous metropolis.
